Today we publish the first of several installments from our dev team to give you an inside look at MiMedia. Because so many of you are interested in the Mac desktop client, our first dispatch comes from our lead Mac developer, Brian Novie. At MiMedia we have a penchant for giving everyone a nickname, so without further delay, here's the MiMedia Q&A with Super-Novi.

Brian, thanks for taking a few minutes out of your day for the this little interview. Let's start with the basics. Where are you from?
No problem, glad to do it. I was born in Brooklyn, NY, and I was raised on Long Island. I currently live in Rockland County, NY.

Nice, so you're a local guy, New York born and raised. And what do you do at MiMedia?
My job at MiMedia is to bring the MiMedia Mac client to life! As a Mac user, I can't wait to finish it up and get user feedback.

Aside from writing code, what else do you like to do?
My wild days are over, I have a wife and twins, and spending time with them is what I enjoy most. The next item on my to-do list is to go to Europe!

Besides the vacation time, what do you like best about working at MiMedia?
The best part of my job is the team of professionals who surround me. They are all passionate about MiMedia, building an awesome service, and love what they do. It is contagious...in good way.

On the UX level, what is the biggest challenge in designing the Mac client?
Apple publishes Human Interface Guidelines for their platforms -- and they request that developers stick to these guidelines. You really need a compelling reason to stray from them. For example, it is not advisable to completely brand our Mac OS X client with a non-standard color scheme. The UI that we're working on consists of a MiMedia Setup Assistant, System Preferences Pane, Status Bar menu and possibly traditional notification pop-ups. We have to balance the Human Interface Guidelines vs. consistency across clients. Another difficult challenge for the Mac OS X Platform is building out the custom folders and files that MiMedia is handling. Apple does not have a public API that meets our requirements and -- while it can be done -- we need to pay extra attention for every new release of Mac OS X to make sure everything performs flawlessly.

Sounds like there are a lot of things to take into consideration. Are there product features that will necessarily have to change or be added to the Mac client?
For the first release, probably not. Moving forward, however, we'll need to consider core Apple products like iPhoto and iTunes, and make sure that we give the user the ability to manage just portions of their photo and music libraries. This feature is critical, especially for smaller data accounts and users that only want to back up certain things from their computer.

What about at the coding level? Any challenges there?
The most difficult code challenge will be using the private and undocumented Apple APIs in order to accomplish our goals. Usually the APIs do not change in minor releases, but they often do in Major releases. We expect a major release from Apple every 18-24 months. For example, right now we're looking at two choices for file monitoring, one private that Apple uses for Spotlight, and the less powerful public API. But this is a critical feature with critical distinctions. Also, as noted above, badging in the Finder will require some creative application development! We will need to add functionality to the Finder with Apple's little known Scripting Additions.

So here's the question that all our Mac users want to know: will there be a beta and how does one sign up?
Yeah, we'll have both a limited release alpha and a comprehensive beta Mac OS X program soon and look forward to member participation and feedback. Those that are interested can sign up for updates on the Mac beta program at http://www.mimedia.com/download-osx/.

Nice, we can't wait to test it out. Is there anything else about it you want to share with us?
My MO on the Mimedia Mac Client is that no one should think it's "simply a Window's product that has been ported." My primary focus is to get it to work with seamless integration, feature parity, following Apple Guidelines while maximizing MiMedia branding. We are going to leverage many open source projects such as FUSE for Mac OSX. This will be key to implementing our Network Drive.

Well we appreciate your hard work in making it happen. Alright, last question and we'll let you get back to work. How did you get your nickname? Are you a Champagne Super-Novi?
A lot of brainstorming took place and "Supernova" -- plus my last name, Novie -- became "Super-Novi." Once we get the Mac release out, then I will be Champagne Super-Novi!

While the media landscape has been buzzing about consumer privacy rights lately (especially surrounding CISPA), an unassuming product announcement from Google may go unnoticed as a real privacy threat despite it's strong ties to the discussion.

Google Drive, which launched today, may seem promising given the power behind its cloud storage platform, but its privacy settings and service quality may not be quite what you expect. There are a couple of questions you should ask yourself before jumping in headfirst.

Who really has access to your personal files?
It is important to remember that in addition to email, social networking and cloud storage, Google is also in the business of collecting your personal information and selling it to advertisers. Google already targets ads directly to users based on the content of their Gmail messages, so who's to say they'll stop there? Your personal media files may not be as private as you think. Do you really want your personal photos, videos and music collection to be available to corporate advertisers?

Are you getting the specialized service you need?
When it comes to trusting your storage provider, there's a lot that can be said for using a more targeted, advertising-free platform to protect personal photos, videos, music and documents. When you opt for service from a large organization that caters to the needs of multiple audiences, you forgo the personalized service that comes from using an independent provider that has your interests in mind. If you're looking for an easy way to organize, view, stream and share your personal media files, a personal media platform may be your best option. Ask yourself, are you getting the complete multimedia experience you need from your service provider?

Just a little food for thought... Always remember to take the time to investigate the privacy settings and specialized capabilities of forthcoming technologies and services in full before you sign up.

- Erik Zamkoff, CEO, MiMedia

Let's face it - cloud storage is a competitive marketplace. There are tons of options out there and it can often be difficult to decipher which is the right one for you. Ultimately, the platform you choose should reflect your specific storage needs.

We have spent a lot of time developing a platform with the everyday media user in mind. Our team originally got together to discuss the pain points we had with cloud storage in order to develop the best personal media-focused platform possible.

Here is our personal media platform explained:

A clean cloud is a happy home: Rather than have your music stored in separate folders, we wanted to create an organized dashboard so you can clearly view all of your media in one simple interface. You can sort your music by song, album, artist, decade or playlist as well as sort your photos and videos by galleries, date taken or title.

No two files are created equal: Simply put, a personal media platform cannot be identical to a typical file storage platform. Not every platform is equipped to support all file types. We built a platform that supports all media file types so that you only need one storage platform for your media.

Bang for your buck: Media files are typically a lot larger than that of other documents. Our 7GB of free storage upfront, as opposed to the 2GB or 5GB freemium model offerings you typically see, is a testament to our belief that our customers should get the most value out of our service.

Saving bandwidth and time. Our patented Shuttle Drive service is our pride and joy. That's because we know what it's like to clog up your bandwidth when attempting to upload gigabytes and gigabytes of photos and music. Trust us, we feel your pain. We wanted to provide effortless file onboarding into the cloud, and so we did. Send us your files on a USB and we'll do all the heavy lifting for you.

Interactive streaming: We want your media experience to be as interactive and aesthetically pleasing as possible. Our music player lets you listen to your entire music collection from anywhere on demand. Still not satisfied? Let your music library serve as an audible backdrop as you view your photos in full-screen slide show mode.

All this from the palm of your hand: If you enjoy our media streaming capabilities on your PC, you should also try them out on your iPhone and iPad. Our mobile app lets you rewind or fast-forward to a specific point in a video when you show off home videos to friends and you can stream your music playlists on the go. We also recently added a new Download Bar feature that shows the status of your current downloads from anywhere, at anytime.

Personal media is always evolving, so we want to hear from you. What are you looking for in a personal media storage platform? Feel free to contact us here.

The days are getting longer and flowers are in bloom, leaving no doubt that Spring has begun. Spring marks the start of many yearly occurrences: allergy season, baseball season, and of course, Spring cleaning.

While Spring cleaning typically consists of projects such as weeding the lawn or cleaning out the attic, this year MiMedia wants to remind you to Spring clean your digital life as well. For instance, all of those photos and videos you have on your computer and mobile devices should be backed up and organized.

To get you started, here are a few tips that will help you backup and protect your personal data.

Know What's at Stake
Many people don't realize the value of their digital life until a hard drive crashes and their data is lost forever. Your digital life is a special, but fragile thing, made up of your priceless photos, videos and important documents that need to be protected. Remember, you can replace a phone or a computer, but you can't re-create your memories.

Think Beyond Physical Storage Devices
Physical storage devices, such as USB drives and external hard drives, do not provide any extra layers of security or backup. Physical storage devices can still crash, get lost or stolen, fall from your desk, or even succumb to spilt of coffee. Cloud backup is a great, easy option to avoid these potential disasters.

Back Up on a Regular Basis
Because a hard drive crash can occur at anytime and rarely gives any warning, it's important to back up your data regularly (not just once a year at Spring time). For example, MiMedia provides both automatic online backup and cloud sync services to ensure that all of your data is protected, saving you the pain of having to constantly back up files on your own.

We hope that all of your Spring cleaning projects go smoothly this year, and if you need any help cleaning up or managing your digital life remember that MiMedia is always there to help.

A year ago, a group of Redditors came across some disturbing statistics on how often consumers backed up their data. For instance:

39% of consumers have never backed up their computer files

89% of consumers do not perform regular backups

82% of consumers only store their data in one place; their primary PC

People are continuing to expand their digital life, and as the number of their digital photos, videos and music grows so does the value of their collections. Unfortunately, without regular backups these collections could be lost in an instant due to a hard drive crash, software corruption, virus, theft or even spilt water.

In order to raise awareness about how quick and easy data backups can be, World Backup Day--a nationwide reminder to backup your files--was created. If you've checked the Mayan calendar recently, you may have noticed some rocky predictions for 2012. We're not so sure if we buy into all of the apocalyptic predictions, but we do believe in computer meltdowns and hard drive crashes--and unfortunately they are definitely going to happen this year.

Consider this: every year, 3% of new hard drives fail, and this rate increases as the drive gets older. The second your hard drive crashes, you lose every single file, from family photos to your favorite music, stored on your computer.

March 31st marks World Backup Day--a nationwide reminder to ensure all of your files are backed up, whether in the cloud or on an external hard drive. In support of this initiative, we're hosting a contest that gives you the chance to win a one-year MiMedia Premium 250 GB subscription (a $99 value!) to help you make sure you never lose your most precious digital data.

Here's how to enter:

Sign up for MiMedia's free 7GB plan and you are automatically entered to win one of 31 premium plans that we're giving away.

Once you've signed up for a free account, share the contest with your friends to be entered for more chances to win (be sure to tag us on Facebook or Twitter for your entry to count).

For more information on how to enter, visit our contest page at www.mimedia.com/wbd2012. If you're looking to backup your work documents in the cloud, you may be looking into business cloud storage plans. But do you also need a place to backup and secure your personal media files, such as photos, videos and music? There is no need to buy two separate accounts for both types of files.

We're not talking about an enterprise-wide cloud storage plan, but rather individual user plans for those who need a simple, secure option to backup their personal and work files. One cloud platform can make work and personal storage simpler and easier, and here's why:

Manageability: Two storage accounts equals two separate logins, two separate web clients and one big hassle. Why not keep all of your files--personal or otherwise--organized neatly in one single interface? Select a cloud storage provider that best meets your unique organizational needs.

Cost savings: Instead of purchasing two online backup services and paying two premiums, look for a service that meets both your business and personal needs at one set price. Additionally, look for a cloud storage provider that offers free storage upfront. You'll need more than 3GB to 5GB if you're using one platform for both your personal media and work files.

Automatic backup for all of your digital assets: A single backup and cloud storage platform means your personal and business files are automatically backed up no matter what.

One simple onboarding process: One of the biggest challenges users face when turning to the cloud is the initial upload process, which depending on the number and size of files, can be timely and use up your bandwidth. Keep this process simple by only putting yourself through it once--and look for storage providers that want to help you keep the onboarding process as painless as possible.

Security and Privacy: Business files can often contain sensitive data and materials. No matter what cloud storage plan you choose, be sure to choose one that keeps your privacy and security in mind. Whether personal media or business files, make sure you have the ability to share files privately. While social sharing can be fun, you also don't want to inadvertently share personal photos of your family with the entire Web.
There are many consumer cloud storage services out there, but how do you know which one is right for you? To help you evaluate the current options in the marketplace, we pulled together a few questions you should ask yourself and your prospective cloud storage provider before you wholly commit to a service plan.

Will my files be backed up in real-time? Scheduling routine backups can be a pain. Look for a cloud storage solution that has real-time backup capabilities. That way every time you download a song, add a picture, or save a document, that file can be automatically backed up over your broadband connection.

Will I be able to locate my files quickly and easily? Ever have to riffle through file after file, search bar after search bar, just to find the one home video you wanted to share with your friends 20 minutes ago? Look at the organizational structure of your potential cloud storage account. Does it logically organize your data by file type or date saved? A good way to know whether or not you jive well with a provider's interface is to take advantage of available free trial offers.

Will I be able to upload all of my files? Let's get real: not all of your digital pictures are JPEGs, and some cloud file storage providers don't support every image file format. Look for a provider that supports multiple file formats of all types of digital media.

Can I access files on my smartphone or tablet device? Given the social tendencies of today's mobile society, we know you're not always sitting at your computer when you want to view your personal photos or listen to your favorite music album. Make sure your cloud services allow you to view your files on the go.

Can I get started using the service without any hassles? For those of you that have a seemingly infinite number of photos, videos, music files and documents, the initial upload process can often result in computer slowdown, bandwidth hogging and file size limitations. Look for providers that offer alternate ways to get started using their services. Convenient onboarding methods, like MiMedia's free, patented Shuttle Drive service, ensure a fast and easy initial backup of all your files.

You just took a great picture on your phone of your group. Or how about you just got back from vacation with a camera full of scenic photos. Thinking about these scenarios, where is the first place you would go to share your photos?

Our guess is many of you are thinking about your online social networks. While it's quick and easy to upload and share your photos with your family and friends via social networks, it's important to keep in mind that there are potential privacy and security issues.

Taking a look at social networks' privacy guidelines, you'd be surprised to learn that once uploaded, your personal photos could become the social network's property. Some social networks even have the right to feature any of your photos on their home page. Do you really want your personal family memories being shared with the world?

It's time that people take back control of their personal media shared on social networks.

Reviewing the privacy guidelines is a first step. Many social networks give you the option of adjusting your settings to only share information with certain groups of people. For example, you can create a family group with Grandma, Uncle Fred, and Cousin Sally, sharing personal images only with them.

However, if you are not comfortable with the privacy settings, another option is to simply not share the media you wouldn't want anyone but your closest friends and family to see. Another possibility is to join another social network, or find a new way of sharing your personal photos. For example, with MiMedia you can send a private email link to friends and family so they can view your photos. If you want to share the photos with more individuals, you can also easily share photos and videos to your favorite social network newsfeeds.

If you have already shared your photos, and do not have copies of the originals, there are ways of downloading all the photos to your computer--from there you have the option of removing them from your social network and storing them elsewhere.

In the end, it's important to remember that these are YOUR photos, YOUR videos and YOUR memories--make sure you are always in control of your digital media.

The online community is abuzz about privacy this week--from the now mandatory Facebook Timeline to Google's privacy policy changes. There is no doubt the National Cyber Security Alliance (NCSA) selected the perfect week to host its annual awareness initiative aimed at promoting an individual's right to protect their personal information--Data Privacy Day 2012.

Although the official Data Privacy Day is slated for this Saturday, January 28, this morning U.S. Federal Trade Commissioner Julie Brill and other privacy leaders discussed the responsibility of organizations to operate securely and protect consumer privacy rights in "The Intersection of Privacy and Security."

In case you missed out on the live streaming event on Facebook this morning, we thought we'd pull together a few of our own tips for making sure you stay safe online.

Understand the privacy policies of the organizations with whom you interact online. This includes social networks, online backup solutions, cloud storage providers, email clients, etc. The more you know, the better armed you'll be against accidently releasing a private photo or video you never meant to upload publically.

Do not reveal personal information inadvertently. Know when you want to use your real name versus a pseudonym. Only give your personal information to websites you trust.

Beware of websites that offer some sort of reward or prize in exchange for your contact information or other personal details.

Do not automatically consent to the collection, use or storage of your personal information without understanding what they will be used for.

Talk to your friends and family about online privacy. The NCSA has a great resource for how to talk to your kids about staying safe online.

If you'd like to keep tabs on Data Privacy Day, check out the NCSA's blog here: http://www.staysafeonline.org/blog

We'd love to hear your thoughts on online privacy too. Do you have any tips to share? Any changes you'd like to see organizations make in their privacy policies? What are you doing on Data Privacy Day to make sure your friends and family know how to protect themselves online?
